Osteria Giotto serves authentic Italian cuisine; everything is fresh and made in house. The decor is simple and pleasant. The service is attentive and efficient. The food is delicious and is served in satisfying portions. This is one of the more expensive Italian restaurants in Montclair, but one definitely gets what one pays for.

Reservations are worthless
We dined here last fall, had reservations and had to wait over an hour once we arrived. The food was good, so we decided to give it a second chance. Went back this weekend with out of town guests, assuming the kinks would be ironed out, and had the same problem. The wait time was almost comical. We won't be back. Reservations are nonesense, everyone is treated as a walk-in. They really need to get their act together or they will be a failed Montclair restaurant.

We go to a restaurant for the quality of the food, the wine list and the service. The food was ok as was our choice of wine. The service was good, but there were too many loud and self absorbed people eating there which ruined the experience.

The food is consistently wonderful, the staff is friendly and warm no matter how busy the place is and it is busy all the time because of the high quality of the food! Such a gem!

Large portions to compensate for poor quality.
I went to Giottas for my anniversary. I ordered an appetizer portion of their gnocci which I requested to be served in a pesto sauce & for my entree I ordered the osobocco. The gnocci was submerged in olive oil, and the pasta itself was very chewy. I expect pasta of this quality to come from a pizzeria and not from a highly rated Italian restaurant, especially in Montclair. Gnocci is supposed to melt in your mouth, and not have a chewy consistency. The Osobucco was decent at best. The sauce lacked flavor, and the spinach mashed potatoes were very starchy. The portions were humongous, which to me is a turn off, because usually big portions mean poor quality, as in this case. My wife ordered the tri color salad and the shrimp scampi. Both dishes were bland, and easily forgotten. My wife also said that the shrimp was chewy, similar to the Gnocci dish that I had ordered. The only good thing about this experience was the service. The waitstaff was fast, friendly, accommodating, and very professional. I don't understand how Giottas has gotten such high ratings from Zagats, as I was very unimpressed.

Awesome dinner!
I had an amazing dinner here the other night and was thoroughly pleased with my experience. The service was professional. The appetizer (I can't remember the exact name, but it was a tuna carpaccio recipe) was AMAZING. Entree's were tasty. Would definitely recommend this for a gathering with friends or for a special date night out.

Not a great experience
I went here last week with my boyfriend for dinner. I have been here a couple of times and things were better. For some reason this time it seemed so unappealing, noisy and the service was not great. I had pasta in a red sauce that was very acidy my boyfriend had the veal which I think would have tasted good if it wasn't over cooked. There just is no ambiance here, no music, nothing . Not one time till we were paying the check did anyone ask how our meal was. The only thing that was really good was the chocolate mouse. I don't think I'll be coming back. In this economy I have to feel like I'm welcome.

What exactly is the hype of this place ?? i ACTUALLY HAD TO TRY IT TWICE because i thought it was an unusual experience . I was so unimpressed with being crammed into our seats, the loudness, the publike atmosphere, the rude staff , and the horrible food. I will never be back don't believe all the hype its all false.
